The Formula for Extreme Risk Taking


When ambition meets hopelessness, extreme risk taking is born. This formula can be expressed as:


Ambition + Hopelessness = Extreme Risk Taking


High Testosterone and Low Serotonin Levels


Testosterone, a hormone found in higher levels in men, fuels ambition. On the other hand, low levels of serotonin induce feelings of hopelessness. People, both men and women, at the bottom of dominance hierarchies are more likely to have lower levels of serotonin. Therefore, men at the bottom of dominance hierarchies are likely to have high testosterone levels and low serotonin levels. This combination of hormones creates a state of both ambition and hopelessness, leading to extreme risk taking.  Men at the bottom of dominance hierarchies are often filled with both ambition and hopelessness. They engage in extreme risk taking, which may look insane to most people. However, these risks may be perfectly sane to those who have nothing to lose and everything to gain.


Baltasar Gracian’s Advice

According to Baltasar Gracian’s The Art of Worldly Wisdom, “Never compete against a man who has nothing to lose.” If your adversary has nothing to lose, he may be willing to burn down everything and everyone, including himself and you. Therefore, it is essential never to put an adversary in the position of having nothing to lose.

Brave Men Want Security for Their Children

Most people are risk-averse, and they always look for a low-risk option when making decisions. Extremely risk aggressive men may be willing to take risks when it comes to decisions affecting their own lives, but they are risk-averse when it comes to their children's lives. Risk aggressive men may seek glory for themselves, but when it comes to their loved ones, they want security.

Creativity is a high-risk, high-reward strategy. Most new ideas are useless, but a tiny minority are spectacular. In creative professions such as entrepreneurship, art, music, and writing, most people make little or no money, but a tiny minority are spectacularly rich.
